Help me give my students the opportunity to learn about the inequities in our justice system and the possibilities for change.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are smart, creative, and community-minded. They are interested and curious about the world around them. They want to understand why the inequities exist in our society, so that they can figure out how to challenge and transform our society. Many of my students are multilingual learners who want to develop their reading, writing, and speaking skills in English.
While my students face many challenges, they have high hopes for their futures and many of them will be the first in their families to attend college.
They amaze me with the many ways they are able to do so much with few resources.
We are a Title I school, so we need a lot of extra resources, especially if we want to order supplies or class sets of books. A high percentage of students receive free and reduced-price lunch, so it is also another financial burden for families to purchase extra books and supplies.
My Project
In my American Democracy class, students will learn about the judicial system in the United States and the ways that justice has not been distributed fairly throughout history. African Americans are incarcerated disproportionately in our country. I want students to learn how this injustice can be challenged and remedied.
Because my students spend so many hours learning virtually, I want them to read a physical copy of Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson.
We will read, analyze, and discuss the book as a class, then present what we learn to local community leaders.
