Our school is set in a suburban community, in a large metropolitan city. Even though it is in a large area, it feels like a small community, and sheltered from the bigger city.
We have a large population of students with deployed parents, as military housing sits adjacent to our school and in the surrounding area.
The students at our school come from a variety of backgrounds and ethnicities, and many students choose to come to our school from other neighborhoods.
Our school offers a challenging but rewarding program, with excellent, student-centered teachers. Our science lab serves all the children in our school, from TK through 5th grade, where students participate in hands-on science and engineering enrichment activities that help to prepare or encourage them to take on a science mindset and develop critical thinking skills.
My Project
After teaching science for twelve years, I am looking to expand our science lab into a full STEAM Makerspace classroom. The materials for this project will help us get a good start in building this space.
We need to offer ample opportunities for students to be creative, explorative, and also to develop critical thinking skills.
In order to accomplish this, our Makerspace needs building and construction materials like Brain Blox, Makedo tools for cardboard construction, wood spools and craft people, and art supplies to enhance their builds aesthetically.
Students will also have an opportunity to practice math skills and business sense when they have to consider budget and spending as part of the engineering and design process.
