Uncovering the Mystery With Chemistry

Help me give my students the opportunity to have a hands-on experience with chemistry by getting them four mystery powders classroom kits.

My Students

My students are the entirety of our school. I serve all the students at our school in the discipline of science. My students come to me ready to learn, explore, and experiment to become critical thinkers.

Part of my school is Title I, which means they come from high poverty situations and may not have access to materials and resources at home.

Part of my school is Magnet, which means their parents may not live close by, but have chosen to send their child here because of the opportunities and experiences they can have as part of at our school.

My Project

With this collection of chemistry materials my students will be able to identify mystery powders by conducting experiments on them.

If a mystery powder turns purple with the addition of iodine, what does that mean?

What are the components of that powder? My students will learn what it means and be able to make predictions of other materials that may turn purple, proving that a certain substance is contained within. They will experience the meaning of a chemical reaction when vinegar is added to a mystery powder that bubbles. My students will experience many "a ha" moments while using these materials.
