I am a high school intervention teacher in an urban district in the state of Ohio. The subjects that I teach are as varied as the lives of my students. The at risk students that I teach are from 9th to 12th graders.
Many of us have earned respect from peers or have developed our self skills to a point of satisfaction. At risk students are many times expected to be seen but not heard. Why? What we teach is many times only reserved for the "normal" students and does not take into account for the "others." My students are the "others." Through knowledge is power but how can these "others" understand that power if they are expected to do little to no work and just behave? Intervention Science is the subject most taught in my class but the lack of supporting resources hinders potential learning.
The students in my classes need experiment kits, activity books, informational text, and a chance to have the hands on activities available to other students. MATERIALS and a chance is all these students need...and deserve.
The purpose of these materials is to conduct experiments and activities that will allow my students to find relevance in education. Through these materials and resources the students will develop skills that most think impossible or to difficult. My students want knowledge and will show their talents in their unique learning styles through these materials and create a new culture and climate for learning upon entering the class and school building.
My students need a reason to understand the power of knowledge and develop a "wanting" for knowledge. The materials we currently have are at times too low or not adequate enough. All my students have suffered with learning disabilities but are not ignorant or completely helpless. My students can learn and do so in unique and varying ways. They just need a chance to prove their equality of knowledge and demonstrate understanding in their way.
I challenge you! Think about when you were denied something so special that it could change your life. Think about a time when you may have been belittled and your peers had low expectations of you. Remember how you felt? Disgraced, disrespected, unwanted, unneeded. Now what were your actions? These kids act out in a negative way because they feel they have no choice. Give them one. They are hungry for growth. They just can't see it without some guiding and supportive help. That is your challenge today. With you help, they will show you they want POWER!
