My students need an ultraviolet light source that can handle our vast science laboratory classroom!
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Petuskey's classroom raised $275
This project is fully funded
My Students
In our science laboratory, we have a Physical Science poster depicting the spectrum of light in the universe. All but a narrow band of this light is invisible to the human eye. My students are now clamoring the same science question: "Why can't we see the rest of it, now?".
This is an excellent question, and it's high-time for some real, hands-on answers!
My students are aware of the fluorescent colors used in their backpacks, shoelaces, and textbooks (to attract attention), but are they really seeing these colors for what they truly are?
My Project
For months now, our science students have explored the effects of short- and long-term ultraviolet (UV) light exposure on living things, as well as animals' ability (and humans' inability) to see this light.
Now, we are ready for the next leap in science inquiry: revealing the photon-exciting effects of UV light on everyday colors and objects that we, as humans, take for granted.
The problem is, our student population size (and room size) is vast, too large, in fact, for our existing UV lamp to adequately perform for this line of inquiry. We need to broaden our point-of-view, and our tools of observation!
This UV lamp is custom-made for vacuous spaces (our chosen model is typically used for rooms 30x60' in size!). Why is this important? Because single-bulb UV lamps are great for close-up work in small spaces. Typically, UV light doesn't travel very far. To fill our classroom with UV light, to literally bounce it off every wall, we require a UV lamp with multiple bulbs. This lamp should definitely do the job! We will soon be able to fluoresce the colors of our clothing, backpacks, books, packages, art supplies, and jewelry.
