Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
An exceeding majority of my students, in addition to struggling with the issues that typical teens are facing, also have recently arrived n New York City, the epicenter of the American experience. Coming from nations with unstable governments and economic crises, most of my students experience interrupted schooling, complex trauma, social unrest, intense mental and physical stressors, and isolation from friends and loved ones who they often must leave behind for a more hopeful life in the U.S.
Having this well-developed workbook - one for each student - will enable the class to read, write in, discuss, and reflect on their mental health and the health of the wider society in which they live.
Each year, I incorporate the "Seven Dimensions of Health and Wellness" in my unit plans, and now I want to supplement my own curriculum with this text.
In addition to reading and writing in the workbook on their own terms, I will lead students on structured and trauma-informed explorations of topics including disrupting negative self-talk; assertive communication; family and cultural influences on self-esteem; building and maintaining healthy relationships; responding to stressors; disrupting the dangers of perfectionism; and, how to work through emotional barriers to confidence and self-compassion.
Having taught my health education course for over a decade to immigrant teens with multiple outlooks, cultures, languages, and backgrounds, I know how much they crave a safe space to discuss how they are feeling, and how they can integrate traditional family values around their self-worth.
