This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Latitude is in the heart of the Fruitvale in Oakland, where ultimate frisbee is not a sport that is very popular. It's a predominantly white sport, so I want to bring some of our black and brown students into the sport. I play for the local pro team, the Oakland Spiders, and I have tried as much as possible to get kids to come out to games and get hyped for the sport, and now that they're excited to play, we have no discs! Please help me get discs into my students' hands.

It's a sport that maybe doesn't mean much to others, but I've seen how important team sports can be to students because they teach values of trust, communication, discipline, and empathy.

Ultimate is an amazingly unique avenue for this because most students are new to the sport so creates an equal playing ground and a more collaborative learning environment. Often sports such as Football, Soccer, or Basketball create power struggles with students that already have lots of experience and feel like they are beyond the level of their peers.

Ultimate is also usually a self-officiated sport at the club level, so students need to work on conflict resolution skills, and integrity as they learn the rules and how to navigate and enforce them. These are skills that are especially valuable at Latitude because we are focused on project based instruction and group-work where students need to exercise these skills daily in their classrooms.
