My Project
Ukuleles are a great classroom instrument for elementary students. The instrument is smaller than a guitar, perfect for the smaller hands of elementary children. Ukuleles are a way for students to accompany themselves and others when singing. Ukuleles also allow students to apply many different levels of music knowledge such as rhythm, melody, harmony, performance, and musical elements, for a broader understanding and appreciation for music.
The ukuleles will not only benefit this year's students, but students for years to come.
We can build on previous knowledge throughout my elementary students' music education. With a class set, all students can have the opportunity to participate during lessons.
Many music curriculum resources include a plethora of ukulele accompaniments and lessons at several grade levels. We can use ukuleles to expand our music reading skills and make some music topics such as chords more tangible and accessible for my students.
Elementary instrumental programs currently exist in our school district, but they are not as easily accessible, as it requires parents to bring students before school. This opportunity will allow my third through fifth grade students to play another instrument aside from typical classroom rhythm instruments like cymbals, drums and xylophones.
