This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach music (vocal, theory, and history) to a diverse group of music students at a Title I Visual and Performing Arts school in Los Angeles. Students come to our public high school from all over the city to receive a top-notch education in both academics and their chosen art form (music, dance, visual or theater). Many of them go on to study at some of the top academic colleges and art schools across the country.

Our students are hungry for opportunities to explore music and to share their music making with the world.

My Project

My students will be spending the fall semester of 2020 learning from home. As music students at a performing arts high school, they are required to learn how to perform music from different styles, cultures, and time periods. However, the act of gathering to rehearse and perform may be out of the question for the time being because there are serious concerns about spreading the coronavirus in group settings. Therefore, my students will be learning how to make music through distance learning.

Unfortunately, most of my students can not afford to purchase instruments for their homes.

Therefore, this distance learning project would allow my students to have an instrument (ukulele) to accompany their voice when they are completing singing prompts from home. They'll be able to sing complete songs with an instrument backing their voice, instead of singing a cappella the entire semester.
