My Students

Have you experienced the joy and happiness that results from being part of a ukulele ensemble? I work at 2 schools, and have been fortunate to obtain over 40 ukuleles for my 2 schools through Donors Choose contributors! I still don't have enough ukulele books for my students however.

I teach music in metropolitan Illinois at 2 public elementary schools.

At the school where these books will be primarily used, many of the students are bilingual in English and Spanish. My music students attend preschool to grade 8. The ukulele books requested will be used by students in grades 2- 8 as part of the regular general music curriculum. In general music students in primary grades dance, sing, and play instruments. Students in older grades do much of the same, but also study theoretical and historical aspects of music including development of Jazz, composition, and improvisation. The ukuleles we currently own are used by all students where class sizes permit, and students learn folk songs, accompaniment skills, strumming patterns, and history. They also have fun!

My Project

The resource I'm requesting is the book "Play Ukulele Today." This is a ukulele book with CD accompaniment which will allow students to develop their performance skills, accompaniment skills, and singing skills in large and small settings. The book is especially valuable because it includes illustrations which show where the fingers should be placed in order to play various chords. The book acts as a reference for the beginning student. The book also contains songs that are of interest to students, and the CD provides a musical accompaniment to the melodies. The students may sing and strum along to the CD, which is motivating to beginning students. As students progress strumming patterns are explained.

With your donation, every student in my class will have a ukulele book provided to them which is motivating and of high musical quality!

I expect my students will become even more engaged and excited about learning the ukulele as a result. My students will develop their accompaniment, strumming, and singing skills too!
