This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a Title 1 school in the lowest income neighborhood on the North Side of Houston, TX. Despite being in this situation, I find the students to be extremely happy, friendly and giving.
Last year we received our first set of ukuleles and it had a huge impact on our students and teachers.
The students love playing them. Because of its ease, most pick it up really quickly so it builds their self-esteem. Teachers have been asking to learn how to play them so they can incorporate them into their classrooms.
These students love to perform, they love expressing themselves and they need more opportunities to do so. With the help of our staff, we are trying to expand our fine arts program. These instruments will help us do so.
My Project
My students need a ukulele library , including such as The Beatles, Pop Songs, and Easy Christmas Hits, and new electric ukulele. We just started using ukuleles last year. We have a class set of ukuleles but need more music. Last year we purchased a class set of ukuleles and it was a huge hit. Our students from Kinder thru 5th grade all learn how to play the ukulele. Not only do we teach music concepts but math, reading, and science using these instruments. This summer we purchased more so we could have bigger groups and start an after-school ukulele club.
Our need now is to purchase music for our students to play.
These items would really allow us to have a solid music library. We would also like to get an electric ukulele to support us when we perform.
