Help me give my students a class set of ukuleles, which will give them the opportunity to explore an activity that provides a positive outlet for them, as well as teach them valuable lessons like determination!
I teach at a Title I school in South Carolina, where students in the area suffer from high poverty and adverse childhood experiences. People say that based on statistics, the odds are stacked against them. But they have not met my students yet.
Despite these statistics, my students are movers and shakers (figuratively and literally).
They are the embodiment of synergy. If you give them free rein to be creative, they will take it further than you ever could have envisioned.
My students come to class with open minds and hearts, and deserve the opportunity to explore, and succeed, at whatever they set their minds to. I am extremely excited to be making music with such a positive, enthusiastic group of students.
My Project
At the beginning of the school year, I ask each student their hope and dream for music. Each hope and dream that has been shared has been centered around learning to play an instrument, in particular the drum and ukulele. My students come into the classroom with excitement and enthusiasm, asking every day when they are going to be able to play these instruments. I want to make their hope and dream for music come true.
There is a plethora of benefits in learning to play an instrument, such as enhanced brain function, increased coordination, the development of math skills, and so much more.
Learning to play the ukulele will provide students these opportunities, as well as create a positive environment where students will feel confident in taking risks, trying new things, and building musicianship with their classmates.
These ukuleles will be used to create beautiful music and build community in the classroom and school! I chose the ukulele for music class because students have shown an astonishing interest in it. I feel students will be the most successful in learning to play the ukulele since it has fewer strings and is affordable, so if students want to continue their learning outside of school, they have a greater opportunity to do so. Help me make my students hopes and dreams come true!
