My Students

Were you ever afraid to go to school? Did you ever feel as though you didn't have any friends? Perhaps you were shy and didn't know how to make friends because of this. So many kids today can answer "yes" to those questions. I want to help my students feel awesome when they're in my classroom.

I teach 2nd grade at a small suburban school in Washington.

My school is designated as a high-poverty school with many students receiving a free/reduced prices meals because of their socioeconomic situation. If you were to come visit, however, you would never know that. You would see students who love learning and want to do their very best. This year, I will be the teacher of about 22-27 second graders. My classroom of 7 and 8 year olds is always made up students who have a wide variety of abilities, interests, and challenges. This includes learning support students, English language learners, and academically gifted students. I am here to teach them all and give them the best education.

My Project

I want my students to feel comfortable as they spend their second grade year in my room, but how can I help them feel that way? As I thought about this very question, a memory from my own childhood just hit me: friendship bracelets! I am a proud child of the 80's and I remember almost constantly being attached to different colors of embroidery floss (think yarn) as I spent hours tying those strands of floss into knots, knots, and more knots until I had a finished a friendship bracelet. I would give the bracelet to someone and then make another. Now, as a teacher, I Kknow I can use this in my classroom for my students. We will be going back to school in less than a month and I am planning on using the friendship bracelets as a super-fun back to school activity with my class. We will talk about friendship, start building our classroom community, and then begin making friendship bracelets for each other using the embroidery floss and storage boxes requested.

With the embroidery floss, tape, and how-to books I am requesting (along with the storage boxes for all of these supplies), my students will have the materials they need to start their school year in a positive, engaging, fun, and meaningful way.

The benefits of this project will continue throughout the year, a proven boost to learning. We appreciate your support!
