My Students
"I made this!" These were the words a student exclaimed last year when she completed her first project. Witnessing the joy that a 7th grade student experiences from using a their creativity and problem skills is thrilling as a teacher.
Our school opened over 50 years ago as a voluntary method of desegregating schools by creating a Montessori magnet school in the heart of a high poverty area in Milwaukee.
The school has grown into a K3-12th grade Montessori IB program. This is the only such program like this in the world. Yes, the world. As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. I am looking to provide my students with creative, meaningful, and high interest learning experiences.
My Project
For the past five years, I have taught a robotics class at my school using LEGO Mindstorms. The primary goals of the class are to help students develop programming skills and encourage collaborative problem solving. This year, a parent told me that she has noticed her son coming out of his shell more and that she credits the robotics class. This made total sense to me. The team approach to solving problems combined with the hands-on work creates a very supportive environment for personal growth to take place along side academic growth.
My students need a more advanced program kit to take their skills to the next level.
This particular set includes several challenges based around space exploration themes. I know my students will love it!
