This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are low income minority groups (african american and immigrants/immigrant descendants). Many of them feel they will never be able to attend a post secondary institution. I prepare them with employability skills through my "On the Job Training Program" and "Career and Technical Education Internship". At the moment, we are working on getting the ServSafe Industry Certification as many of them work in the restaurant business. I use Knowledge Matters Programs; at the moment we are working on Personal Finance and Restaurant. During the 2nd semester we will work on Accounting, Entrepreneurship, and Management. I am a career change with experience in the field of Accounting, Human Resources, and Management. I bring my experience from my years in the business world to help them write resumes, resume cover letters, and thank you letters that will help them get noticed. I also teach them how to conduct good interviews, and I establish partnerships in the community to help them find employment. I am a minority (Puerto Rican born in NY), I was a single mother for 8 years and finished my Bachelor's degree while working full time as a single mother. I use this as an example to inspire them.
My Project
I am the only teacher in the "On the Job Training Program" and "Career and Technical Education Internship" as such I teach dual modality (students at home and students physically in the classroom). It is very difficult to deliver the full lesson as I need to share my screen to teach and then I cannot monitor the students, or if I monitor and assist the students I have to stop sharing the class material.
Some students do not like to ask questions live and send messages in the chat during class, however, I do not always see their questions as I cannot see them if I am sharing my screen teaching.
Thus, these students sometimes leave class with questions unanswered or have to send their concerns via Remind after class. This is not as effective as I would like to be with them.
I want them to succeed, to understand that no matter where you come from if you work hard and stay focused you can achieve. I want them to believe in themselves as I do. What better example than a hispanic, single mother, working a minimum wage job, and was able to earn a Bachelor's degree and is currently working on her Master's Degree. I could go back to the business world and make a higher salary but, schools like mine need teachers that care to help students that seem not to care. It is a challenge to help them understand their worth and possibilities.
More than half of students from low‑income households
