My Students

My high school students are Deaf and Hard of Hearing with various exceptionalities and diverse learning needs, who want to gain skills to be independent successful adults when they graduate.

They are my hardest workers as they are eager to learn.

Some of these students have been at the school since a young age. Some of them arrived after moving from a different country, where they had limited or no access to formal education or formal language. About 90% of my students are considered English Language Learners (ELLs) and use American Sign Language and English to access academic and social information.

This year I continue a new Independent Living Skills program that my students can benefit from and gain skills they need to be successful adults - virtually and face to face. I am working hard to create and find materials that my students can access, through prints and pictures, of a variety of independent living skills topics. Any text I provide needs to be at their reading level, which are significantly below grade level due to language deprivation. Topics include going to the library, clothes, laundry, cooking, food shopping, recreation, and more!

My Project

This year is very different from past years of teaching and the future of education is changing as I predict more opportunities for remote teaching will occur. I currently teach students who are English Language Learners and have language and communication challenges in addition to a variety of disabilities. Some students are face to face and other students are remote. Some days some students miss their bus but join our classes via remote. I want a second screen so I can set up to be able to see them in zoom on one screen and share our work and tasks on another screen.

My students use American Sign Language (ASL) to take in information and express themselves.

It is important that I can see them clearly. Currently with one screen, it is challenging to see them when they sign as their display video is small and I am unable to change size. Using a second screen will help tremendously and save some time.
