My students need basic school supplies in order to do in-class assignments. These school supplies will take the worry off students and parents as we transition back to school during this difficult time.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our middle school is a Title I school with over 80% of its students having free or reduced lunch. I am the AVID elective teacher at NMS. AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID students tend to be from socioeconomically disadvantaged families and will be the first in their families to attend college. AVID aims at bringing the student who is in the academic middle, placing them in rigorous, college-preparatory classes, and teaching them the skills they will need to be successful in college and in their future careers.
My Project
We never expected this to happen. No one could have. Harvey took the city of Houston by storm, both figuratively and literally. It caused so much decimation throughout my district that multiple campuses have been left in conditions where the students cannot return until the second semester. In fact, on Friday, we learned that our campus will now house not only our students but also the students from our district's other middle school. This means that my classroom will now not only be home to my 150 students but also another teacher's 150 students as well. I want to make sure that these four walls of this classroom are a safe place for all of our students in this difficult time. While the schools in our district took a hard hit, our students' homes were hit every bit as hard. I want to be able to lead by example and welcome my counterpart into our room with open arms and an open heart. I want the teacher who will be housed in my room to feel comfortable using the supplies in my classroom. I want to make sure that my students never have to worry about whether they have a pencil to write with. I want to make sure that we are able to continue a rigorous curriculum with research, projects, and collaboration. While sharing one campus may be difficult for our students and staff, it is also an opportunity for us to support each other. At the end of the day, we are one district.
