Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are asking me every day when will they be able to use a computer? They are so hungry for technology and know that it will unlock their potential to learn how to read and advance in their math skills.
My classroom consists with students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities.
They are outgoing and eager to learn. They are very well-behaved and are proactive in their learning.
Our school is an inner-city public school and many of my students don't have access to computers at home. My students are supposed to be college and career-ready by the time they finish high school, but many of them are having significant difficulties with reading at the middle school level. If nothing is done now, they'll only continue to struggle.
My Project
I currently have a computer area set up in the classroom that has posters above the desks on computer etiquette. I have an empty desk and two empty chairs. What is missing in this equation? Two computers that need to be placed on top of that empty desk.
I will have programs installed on the iMacs that will have in-place reading and comprehension lessons. Students will be monitored and a road to progress will begin. I'm hoping that by the end of the year, my students will advance their reading one to two grade levels.
Having two iMacs in my classroom will really get my students more excited to learn.
They will have time set aside to work on advancing their education in technology. I will also have a reading program set up on the iMacs to assist in their progression in reading and comprehension.
There are so many programs available in all subject matters and it will be such a giant plus for my students to be able to have access to these programs.
