Two Classes, One Incredible Story: The One and Only Ivan

My Project

Our third-grade students are curious, enthusiastic, and developing a true love for reading. This year, they’ve been captivated by shared read-alouds and novel studies, diving into characters, making connections, and engaging in rich discussions. As teachers, we love seeing their excitement when they get lost in a great book, and we want to continue fostering that passion.

We are requesting a class set of The One and Only Ivan so that every student in both of our third-grade classes—nearly 60 students—can have their own copy as we read together.

Having a personal book in hand will allow them to actively follow along, annotate, and fully engage with the text. This will strengthen their reading comprehension, improve fluency, and help them connect more deeply with the story.

By providing each student with a copy of The One and Only Ivan, we hope to encourage strong reading habits, build comprehension skills, and foster empathy through the book’s powerful themes of resilience and friendship. A shared novel study creates a special experience that brings our classrooms together, allowing students to engage in meaningful discussions and develop a sense of community through literature. Many of our students don’t have access to books like this at home, so being able to provide them with an engaging, meaningful novel in the classroom is a gift that will have a lasting impact.

Our goal is to create an immersive reading experience where every student feels engaged, confident, and excited about books. By reading The One and Only Ivan together, our students will develop key literacy skills while experiencing the joy of a powerful, unforgettable story.
