Every single day, kids ask me if I have any copies of books in the Twilight series and I have to turn them away! People often think of high school students as reluctant readers, kids who would rather be playing video games than reading. But that couldn't be further from the truth, especially now, during the Twilight hysteria! I teach grades eleven and twelve in a low-income district. My kids may not have the most resources, but they deserve to have access to books they can read for pleasure!
Twilight is a young-adult series of "vampire romance" books. And for whatever reason, all types of students - boys, girls, athletes, class officers, shy kids, loud kids, honor roll students, struggling students - can't wait to get their hands on these books. While I have a few copies of the first book (Twilight) in my classroom, they are checked out constantly so not all of my students have access to the books.
For the first time in my teaching career, I have students begging me for books! This has never happened before, not even during the Harry Potter phase. I know that these books will likely be the first books that some of my students ever read for pleasure, and after reading this series, I'm hoping they'll be more open to pleasure reading in general. If they learn how to escape through literature, they will be readers for life. The Twilight series can help me to make my students lifelong learners.
By providing these books for my students, you can help them to participate in reading for fun - something many of my students have never done before! Thank you for helping to spread the love of reading!
