"People don't realize how a man's whole life can be changed by just one book!" - Malcolm X.
My scholars are 8th grade boys attending public school.
They are critical thinkers with great questions and strong opinions. They are growing up in a very complicated, fast-paced world, but they come to school nearly every day of the year and stay for extended day programming. Our students are extremely loyal to one another and to their teachers. As their educators, we set out to develop and encourage in them resilience, confidence, effort, leadership and commitment to excellence. We are a Title 9 school in a low-performing district in NYC. Many of our scholars read below grade level and have low confidence in their reading and writing skills. However, they demonstrate a depth of curiosity and critical thinking that is undervalued in our society.
We make tremendous effort to select high quality texts and design rich curriculum that celebrate the cultural riches and heritage of our scholars' communities. We want our scholars to see themselves reflected in that legacy.
My Project
Through the generosity of donors we were able to put 60 brand new hardcover books into the hands of 60 of our 8th graders. We met our donation goal and were given additional donations after the project was completed. We would like to use these donations so that all of our 8th graders have a book for an author visit and book signing coming soon!
This book has been a powerful tool for critical thinking, discussion, and writing in our ELA classroom.
Our students are eager to read a new chapter everyday. We have been photocopying materials to give them because at this point in the year our school no longer has a budget for brand new hardcovers.
We know that having an actual book in hand, especially one that is as powerfully written and engaging to a young person as this one is, is a crucial experience for our students. Having this book will give them the kinds of opportunities for deep reading that lead to building greater and greater confidence in our students as readers, writers, and thinkers.
