Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school has a very diverse group of students ranging from your typical suburban middle kids to students whose families are not as mobile. Much of this diversity comes from the neighborhood around my school that is made up of single family homes and various apartments around our school. At the same time, my school is open to transfers from around the city, giving students who are not from the neighborhood a chance to come to my school as well.
All of these different components have created a dynamic in my classroom where students are given the chance to learn from one another, as well as be exposed to lots of different cultural values.
It has also created a classroom with many students who do not have many of the same opportunities in outside of school activities to learn and grow.
My Project
Using digital music and tools such as computers and DJ controllers are the future of music not only here in the United States but globally. Giving students the tools and resources that they need to be successful in an ever shifting musical landscape can help them become more flexible learners and help them build confidence in taking on new challenges and learning to use new pieces of software and hardware.
In my class and during my after-school program, I want to provide students the chance to learn and use tools such as DJ controllers.
This will give them a chance to explore how to take on new challenges and also give them real-world practical skills such as DJing for an audience.
While learning these skills, students will learn about themselves while also learning how to operate digital music software such as Native Instruments Traktor and build stronger math fluency by learning about things like beats per minute, music key, and time. All of this can help students grow academically and emotionally and make school a more successful place for them.
