Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

These children are a wonderful group of diverse personalities, thoughts, ethnicities and disabilities. They all come from an inner-city environment, low income, one parent families, and limited exposure to anything outside of their neighborhood block. Their sheltered and limited lives creates an excitement to explore and discover the world outside of their hometown.

They are a young group that are excited to learn and "see the world" through books and technology: and their eagerness and openness would touch any one's heart.

They are eager to learn about the cultures and environments of the world, and it's abundances; along with the aspects of others lives that are similar, as well as different, from theirs!

My Project

My students need help with many reading skills, such as reading fluency, comprehension and phonics; by using the Read180 program they get enriched reading in topics that are exciting and enriching. Along with, receiving skill support in vocabulary, spelling, comprehension skill and a phonics program designed for their specific needs. We have seen wonderful success with this learning format for our disabled children.

The students work in many different supportive ways with the computer; reading aloud, spelling drills and choral reading, are just a few examples.

This strongly researched based program, is data rich in supporting student literacy growth. But the most significant indicator of growth is the happiness shown by our children, their smiles are amazing to see when they feel successful! Our biggest hurdle is that our older, handed down, computers are failing... creating frustrations for these children, and complicating their learning. Many are missing letter keys, have faulty jacks, wi-fi connections failing, and monitors go blank in the middle of student work.
