My Project
I have a special position in my school-the Calm Classroom Teacher. As a Calm Classroom teacher, I educate our students in grades K-5 in social emotional skills, calming and coping strategies, and executive functioning skills. I help students develop self-awareness, self control, and intrapersonal skills that are so important for school and life success.
I plan to use these books as read-alouds with my daily whole group and small SEL groups to help students understand different perspectives, and appreciate diversity, while also fostering strong relationships and promoting inclusivity.
Social and emotional learning (SEL) books can help our kids develop skills that are beneficial in their personal and academic lives. Social-emotional learning lets children build compassion, explore conflict resolution, identify and navigate emotions, and nurture excitement for the broad and diverse world beyond their doorstep. Using picture books to teach SEL skills are so important, as most picture books feature main characters children can relate to. The characters are all facing the sorts of challenges that children are learning to work through in their daily lives.
Exposure to diverse characters helps children develop empathy and understanding towards people who are different from them, while also developing a sense of belonging and community.
