This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I have been a student teacher for a year now and will be entering the classroom as a first year teacher next school year. After experiencing the warm bond that is created between teacher and student when reading a nice book together, I made it a major goal to build my class library for my future students! I work in the East LA area, an area bursting with humanity and community engagement. The students I have worked with have demonstrated such eagerness and enthusiasm in learning about the world and different cultures through reading. Knowing this, I was very intentional in my choice of books. I want my students to be able to have instant access to an array of stories that are indicative of the diverse, beautiful world we live in and all its people.
While these books will be available in our class library shelf for students to access during certain blocks, I will be using the books primarily in our read aloud/social studies lessons to teach topics in relation to diversity, inclusivity, and acceptance.
I have seen the impressive impact that a simple discussion after a good book can have on a group of young ones, and I hope to continue these learnings in my own classroom with these new books!
