My Project

Finding effective and engaging ways for students to practice math skills at home is a huge challenge!! Worksheets are usually a standard go to for math homework, and while they can offer skill practice, they are useless if the students do not complete them using the correct strategies. Added to that, many parents today feel ill-equipped to help their children with homework because they themselves often don't recognize the way that math is being instructed today and fear telling their kids the "wrong" way.

My goal is to make math hometime time both effective and enjoyable for the whole family.

Instead of worksheets, I want to send each student home with a different hands on math game each night. The games will be directly related to the current standards being taught and each night the student and their family will have a fun new way to practice and build on what we are doing in class.

In addition to being fun, it will also provide opportunities for at home "math talks" as the students and the parents navigate the games together comparing strategies, examining their reasoning and revising their knowledge if needed.

My hope is that by making math homework something my students and their families look forward to, students will complete it with fidelity which will transfer to improved mastery of skills, higher levels of thinking and reasoning and ultimately, improvements in math data through the years.
