it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember your history classes? For many, the thought of history evokes dry lectures and textbook readings about chronology and irrelevant events. ("Bueller?") For my 6th graders, however, studying history means interviewing peers to create oral histories, conducting historical research to create museum exhibits, and crafting documentaries and TED Talks.
In my 6th grade history classroom, I try to bring ancient history to life through project-based learning, collaboration, and technology.
I teach 100 brilliant, resilient, and thoughtful students of color, many of whom are impacted by trauma. By teaching them to develop their critical reading, writing, and thinking skills, I hope to help them better understand historical inequities in order to fight for social justice.
My Project
Video games - if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em! During the past year and a half of the pandemic, my sixth grade students were stuck at home, many without access to a high-interest library full of books. Many also spent a significant amount of time playing video games as a way to connect with family and friends.
In a beginning of year survey, many students identified gaming as one of their primary interests.
Since my goal is to create a library of books that my students are passionate about, adding a new section of video game-related books is a logical next step!
In particular, I strongly believe that these books will help entice students who don’t yet identify themselves as readers. I have noticed that my current handful of gaming books are especially appealing to struggling readers, as their background knowledge helps them to make sense of the text. I am confident that this selection of books will create a new high-traffic zone of my class library. With your help, we can turn my passionate gamers into passionate readers!
