My classroom consists of students who are in first, second, third, and fourth grades. It is a self-contained, low-incidence special education room. The individuals are diverse learners who have moderate to severe disabilities that include autism, Down syndrome, intellectual disabilities, and speech and language impairments. My students come from all over the city of Chicago, making the class rich with diversity and culture.
No matter the challenging situations and difficulties they face, my students continue to come to school happy and eager to learn; they are amazing!
We are a Chicago Public School and our district continues to face financial difficulties. Because of this, the school lacks funding to appropriately support our classroom and students. With a little help from Donors Choose, we can get tools to support, enhance, and facilitate learning in a productive way!
My Project
We are currently learning through a hybrid model. There are students who are remote learning, and students who are in-person learning. When I am doing whole-group lessons, I have both groups. Unfortunately, we don't have speakers to project the volume of the laptop. Because of this, it is very difficult for the remote students to communicate with the in-person students. The speakers will help project the volume so that the lessons are easily heard by all students and they can communicate with their friends.
With the pandemic, there are safety guidelines in place within the classroom.
The students cannot move from their assigned areas. They have to have all of their things with them; they cannot use lockers. This has brought to light their difficulties with organization. The accordion folders will help the students become more organized, and locate their assignments more easily.
Finally, we do not have access to color printers in my school. My students have disabilities that require individualized curriculum that is often in need of color ink. The ink will help with this need.
