My Students
The majority of us have had the stress of an unexpected event impact our lives at some point in our lifetime. Imagine going through a natural disaster like Hurricane Sandy when you are just eight years old. My students need to return to some semblance of normalcy after their terrible ordeal.
My class is made up of 25 third grade students that live in an area that was severely affected by Hurricane Sandy.
We are able to return to our school in the beginning of January after eight long weeks at a host school. This is yet another transition that my students must endure as a result of Hurricane Sandy. Our school was very badly damaged along with most of these kids' homes.
My Project
We are requesting a kidney-shaped table for our classroom. Third grade is a very important year for these little ones. They are just emerging from early childhood classrooms and are expected to be 'big kids' now.
My students are burdened with the stress of knowing that they have to take a state test this year. This fact, coupled with the stress and upset that the hurricane caused has really thrown these kids for a loop.
We need to really get my students back on track and prepared for what lies ahead in their academic careers. Having a kidney-shaped table will enable us to meet in groups so that specific needs can be targeted and addressed.
Every child will benefit from this table and its use in every subject area.
It will help them know that they are important and that their needs are being met. It will give them confidence in themselves and in the people that are here to help them.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
