This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is a classic coming-of-age novel that addresses universal themes of identity, belonging, and the struggles of adolescence, which are especially relevant for middle school students. Middle schoolers are at a critical developmental stage where they are navigating complex emotions, peer relationships, and personal growth. This book offers students a chance to see themselves in the characters, as it explores the tensions between different social groups and the personal challenges of fitting in or standing out. The themes of empathy, resilience, and understanding others from diverse backgrounds encourage students to reflect on their own lives and perspectives. Additionally, the book helps foster important discussions about socio-economic class, family dynamics, and loyalty, which are essential for developing critical thinking and emotional intelligence.

Our students come from a Title 1 school, which means they face economic challenges, with many coming from low-income families.

Despite these challenges, our students are incredibly resilient, hardworking, and full of potential. They come from diverse backgrounds and bring with them a wealth of experiences, perspectives, and unique voices. Their enthusiasm for learning is palpable, and they show great promise when given the right resources and opportunities. They often face barriers to accessing resources such as books, technology, and extracurricular opportunities, but their drive to succeed and grow remains strong. With the right support, they can flourish and develop the skills they need to succeed academically and in life.

The specific items we are requesting, including copies of The Outsiders, are essential tools in fostering a love of reading, improving literacy, and engaging students in meaningful discussions. Having access to individual copies of the book will allow students to read at their own pace, annotate the text, and engage in deeper discussions during group activities.
