As newcomers to our country, my students are anxious to travel across America, state by state through the pages of Johnathon Rand's American Chillers!
Really?
There are high school students who don't speak English and have yet to master the alphabet? Seriously?
Yes, it's true! Walk into my room and you will find the ABC's plastered on the wall, number charts, sight word flashcards and money bingo - all of the basics abound. But, what's lacking, are materials that will hold the attention of the teenagers that eagerly come into my class every day!
My Project
Most of my students have less than a 6th grade education in the countries they come from. They were not exposed to books and never learned the joy of reading. I've been building a class library and every time there's a box that arrives, the children delve in, anxious to see what stories are inside!
Little do they know there's a method to my madness! Not only do I want them to be entertained, I want them to learn vocabulary and grammar and storytelling and more!
It's a known fact, reading English texts leads to increased language acquisition for children who are learning English as a second language.
Fun-filled stories, such as these, will encourage reading as a whole group, with partners and individually. And, without even realizing it, my students will have an increased sense of confidence when reading, writing, and speaking English! Simple as that.
