I teach in a rural community where most students are generational high school only graduates. Our students do not believe they can achieve a post-secondary education. My students are hard-working with a few of them being the sole provider for their families. Some even work two jobs in addition to attending school just to achieve the dream of being the first of their family to attend college.
School sports, hunting, fishing, etc.
provide a brief respite for these young adults. The responsibilities of adulthood have already been forced upon numerous of our students. They face crumbling families, late work nights, and being influences on younger siblings. Through it all, they attend school and set their eyes on their diploma hoping it will be the equalizer that allows them the life they dream.
All of my students have Chromebooks and they spend the majority of their time on them through the day. While new LED lights do brighten the room considerably, they are still harsh on computer screens. This project will allow my students to have the lighting they need in order to succeed in their classroom environment.
