Our elementary school maintains a student-centered approach to education. Through this lens, we have identified three areas where students need support to grow and be successful: providing a compassionate school environment; providing a global education experience through our dual language program; and by integrating technology and STEM into students’ daily learning.
As the school counselor, the projects you will see from me will be focused on building a compassionate, trauma-informed school environment, a place where students feel safe, respected, and free to learn and be themselves.
You will see projects asking for resources that promote healing. As a Title I school last year, all students at our school received free breakfast and lunch. Our school is a high needs school, but our students try their best every day despite what is happening in their lives, and it is my hope to give them additional tools for success.
My Project
I recently went to a local intermediate school and in their library they had a lego wall, the kids used it as a tool to self regulate. They used it as a calming tool and a way to sooth upset and frustrated feelings. I would love to put a lego wall in our Turn Around Room to help support students who are feeling over whelmed and need a break. I am also requesting additional calming tools for our Turn Around Room.
Our Turn Around Room has been utilized 540 times this school year, over 90% of students leave the room feeling better then when they entered.
This is excellent, however our tools have had a tough go at it, most of them are broken, dirty, or have walked away. I am asking for new tools and some additional tools that students have not seen before, a 3-d maze to keep students brains busy and to help calm them down if they are sad or frustrated. I am also asking for some fidget bands to help support our more wiggly students and to help them focus on their work. I use a "breathing ball" in all of my class lessons, I am asking for 1 of these for each of our classrooms. This way teachers can re-focus and calm their class rooms using a tool that students recognize. These tools are helping our students be successful and now we need your assistance to make sure our students keep growing their social emotional skills.
