My Students
My students are eager to learn and willing to become more independent in certain aspects of our subject, like tuning. Technology has developed so much in the past few years. My students say that they are ready to upgrade. They have asked many times recently, when they might be able to learn to tune using personal digital tuners. My students keep me on my toes with technology, and are definitely ready for a device that will help them learn to tune.
My Project
These individual digital tuners would provide the orchestra students a means to tune their own instruments. The device shows the musician whether each string is in tune or out of tune. It also shows the student whether the string is flat or sharp. As the student moves the peg or fine tuner up or down, the digital tuner interprets the sound and indicates when the string is in tune.
This will help the students begin to hear the difference between flat or sharp, by giving them a visual cue while they are developing the aural skills that is also needed to tune their own instruments.
