Everyone has heard that reading is fundamental, but so is listening. Listening to good readers is the foundation to becoming a strong reader.
.
My students are fortunate enough to have ninety minutes a day dedicated to literacy.
This gives them the time to become strong, fluent readers. It also helps with writing and comprehension.
Unfortunately, in an urban school district, we do not have all the resources needed in the classroom to help students achieve these goals. Our listening center has the bare minimum of books, and they are mostly below grade level. Students are not using this center to its full potential because the books we have are lacking informative texts and complex structures, and students don't have access to the fluency of a good reader to listen to and mimic.
My Project
My students need a fiction/nonfiction read-along library to listen to a variety of texts. These books on CD would be a great addition to our classroom listening center. The box of readers will help students hear what good reading sounds like. This will help them become strong readers themselves. The kit includes both fiction and nonfiction stories. Students will be able to hear the difference and then read the difference, too. Getting books to put in the hands of students is every teacher's dream.
This project will show my students the importance of reading, but it will also open their ears to what good reading sounds like.
Having a variety of texts of information and for entertainment will help complete our listening center.
