My Students
Our students are kind, naturally, chatty, and very spirited young children from central Florida. They work very hard to make good grades in their classes and many of them live very difficult living conditions.
We are a Title I school.
We have about 89 percent of our students that receive free or reduced rate lunch. Many come from economically disadvantaged families with one parent homes or raised by other family members. There are a lot of students that do not have food to eat over the weekend. They leave us with a good lunch on Friday and return ravenous on Monday morning for breakfast. Our take home weekend food program has been greatly reduced in the last few years. The number of children being served was cut and the amount or kind of food items are a limited variety. Weekend food items are desperately needed for some of our families.
My Project
The food items will be divided up and sent home with children in need for a weekend care package. Teachers know which children go without eating over the weekend. We have a person on campus that deals specifically with children that are in need of clothes, food, or other necessities in their homes. Small, plastic disposable grocery bags have been used to keep the weekend food packages discrete. The food is delivered to the classrooms at a time when the students are not present, such as lunch or specials, so the bags can be put into backpacks.
Our students are very appreciative of a small bag of food they can eat over the weekend.
We can't provide three meals a day, but we are able to help keep their hunger a little less. An empty tummy is very stressful to our young children.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
