Tuesdays With Poetry
Help me give my students a diverse collection of traditional and contemporary poetry anthologies! This project will fund a class collection of poetry books that will appeal to 8th grade readers.
I teach a diverse group of 8th graders in Language Arts at a middle school in a semi-rural community. My students come from diverse countries and backgrounds; this tapestry of different experiences and cultures makes our student body one that is interesting and charismatic. Many of my students also live in challenging economic conditions; nearly 70% of our students live at or below the poverty level. My 8th graders are hardworking, kind, and eager to learn; they have already shown a love for learning, and I want to provide them resources to enhance their learning experiences.
Every Tuesday students present a poem of his/her choice to read and share with the class. Students write reflections about this poem choice, and every student presents once a month. Students may also craft virtual poetry readings in our district subscription to Flipgrid for additional poetry discussions outside of class.
These books will support my students finding poems they love and cherish.
By funding this poetry collection, you will help open up a world of poetry beyond the traditional "funny" or rhyming poems they have read in elementary school and broaden their reading horizons. Not only will this collection provide students opportunities to read traditional and contemporary poems from around the world, but this collection will support a poetry rich learning environment that helps students enjoy poetry for the pure joy of it.
DonorsChoose makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America create classroom project requests, and you can give any amount to the project that inspires you.
