My Students

My second graders love to read! For many of my students, our classroom library is their only source of books, and therefore it is important that they always have access to books throughout the school day and at home.

I'm a second grade Special Education teacher in New York.

My school is a Title I school, and over 95% of its students receive free lunch. I teach in a collaborative team teaching classroom where almost half of my 24 students have mild to moderate disabilities.

My Project

We have implemented a "book box" lending library where every week students get to borrow seven books each from the classroom and place them in a box that sits on their desk throughout the day. During the day, students read books from their personal book boxes. They also take home a book a night to practice reading. One of our favorite authors and illustrator is David Wiesner. His books are beautifully illustrated, and his stories fascinate my students. We would like a class set of his book, Tuesday, so that each child can have their own copy of this very special book. We would also like seven additional books by David Wiesner for our classroom. These books would be added to our "book box" lending library, so they would be enjoyed by the students both at home and at school.
