My students need 50 copies of Tuck Everlasting and an audio CD, so we can all hold a copy, learn about life and how it changes. Plus we get to read a really great book!

My Students
I need to start this by saying that I didn't read Tuck Everlasting until I was getting ready to teach it. It quickly became one of my faves. I would love to give a copy to each student to remember 6th grade with.
To me it was simply one of those books I didn't want to put down.
First about my students.
We are the largest school in our county in southeastern North Carolina. We serve students in grades Pre-K to 8, our total population is a little over 1,000 students.
Our county is very rural, we have no large cities or towns, the closest is about 45 minutes away, and many of my kids have never been there. Actually most of them have never been out of the county or even the area they live in. Our county is totally dependent upon agriculture and it's supporting industries. Many of my students live within 5 miles of where one or more of their parents grew up and most likely their grandparents. Entire families have worked for the same factory or plant and many of the students will go on to do the same.
My Project
I co-teach a 6th grade class in Language Arts. A part of our curriculum is literature. Tuck Everlasting is one of the books that we want to share and teach to our students. Sixth grade students want to be grown up and yet still want to believe in Santa Claus. Tuck Everlasting will gently tell the kids about how things change and evolve. They will learn how life begins and comes to an end, not in a harsh or brutal way, but in a gentle way that they can understand. Yes many of these kids are farm kids and see life and death, but reading about it is also part of life. We will use this book to help them develop and grow their comprehension, develop vocabulary and discuss the plot with thoughtfulness. They can relate to the story, and enjoy a plain old good read!
So, if you haven't read this book, and yes it is a juvenile book, but a great book is always great book!
So after you help us get a copy in each students hand, I would suggest and encourage you to visit a bookstore, library, used bookstore or hijack your own kids copy when they go to bed. It is a great book!
Thanks for your time and support of Public Education.
