The pandemic really shook things up in the educational world! To say teachers and students have had to pull out all the stops, with limited resources, closures and overall instability, is just the tip of the iceberg. I, myself, made the transition from Physical Education teacher to 12:1 kindergarten teacher, mid-year and with no supplies. I got by on the help from my co-workers who generously shared what they had with me.
All of my students are from low-income households and live in small, cramped, and crowded spaces, and that's if they're not living in a temporary housing unit or shelters; I cannot ask or expect them to come in with all of the supplies they need.
Pencils, crayons and book bags are definitely on the back burner behind food and clothing.
I need to make sure my classroom is stocked with school supplies, snacks, and basic necessities to make sure my special needs students have everything they need to have an amazing and safe educational experience as they start their journeys through school.
My Project
Learning through play is where it's at! Kindergarten is all about learning by playing and exploring. Having manipulatives with letters, numbers and colors enriches the minds of my little ones! Having a class with students with special needs means making sure everyone needs are met, and meeting students at their levels. Sometimes it takes that 1 to 1 learning time with something disguised as a game or toy. These "tub toys" are key for helping students growth mindset, as well as their fine motor skills! It's a win-win situation, and a lot of fun for them!
