Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction!

My students need nonfiction books to explore the world in an authentic way so they can expand their background knowledge and build vocabulary.

My Students

My Kindergarten students are active, curious, enthusiastic learners! They have a million questions about the world around them. My hope is to provide them with nonfiction books that will answer questions, spark curiosity and expand their often limited view of the world.

"Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are." ( Mason Cooley).

Our school is 90% free/reduced lunch. Often my students have not had life experiences such as going to the zoo, visiting a farm or traveling to other places, that provide opportunities to explore, develop vocabulary, and see the world in different ways. As school budgets decrease it becomes increasingly difficult to develop classroom libraries that provide students with reading opportunities focused on nonfiction topics.

In the words of Dr. Seuss, "The more that you read the more things you will know, the more that you learn the more places you'll go!"

I want to provide my students the opportunity to"go" wherever their curiosity may lead!

My Project

Adding nonfiction books to our classroom library will provide opportunities for my students to build background knowledge and vocabulary which will help increase reading levels, reading comprehension and writing.

Many of my students do not have access to books at home, especially nonfiction books so it is vital that they have access to them at school.

The books will be used with whole group, small groups and by individuals during reading, writing, and content areas.

Nonfiction books provide an opportunity to "go" somewhere, explore a topic or provide an answer to some of the million questions a Kindergarten has about the world!
