True Choice Reading Means Access To Financial Literacy Texts

My students need 101 books to improve both their financial literacy and literacy about what it takes to be successful.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Stuart's classroom raised $1,339

My Students

In the typical English class today, students are encouraged to choose independent reading books from a variety of fictional texts. And while this is far from a bad thing -- enjoying stories is a central part of what it means to be human -- I think it's possible to turn choice reading into much more.

My students are contemporary American teenagers.

They struggle with distractions, with finding motivation in school, with picturing a path to the lives they want and making decisions today to get them there in the distant tomorrow. When it comes to English class, some of them are in love with reading fiction -- and some utterly abhor it.

My Project

But what if, in addition to having access to a large variety of fictional texts, my students had access to practical, hands-on books aimed at increasing their financial literacy? What if more of them had the chance each year to discover, as my current student Noah has, the wonders of financial literacy because of a single book? (Noah's breakthrough book was Rich Dad, Poor Dad).

With this project fulfilled, I will have the chance not just to give my students a chance to read books on financial literacy -- I'll have enough books, both in terms of diversity and quantity, to require that, over the course of the school year, each one of my students explores a financial literacy book from a brand-new section of our classroom library made possible by this audacious project.

If you're someone for whom financial literacy has made a large difference, please consider giving!
