Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The True Book Fair at our Title I school in Virginia, will support readers over the summer by providing them with free, self-selected, engaging books for summer reading.

Children without access to books in the summer months experience losses in contextual reading fluency and word reading fluency.

By providing engaging reading materials, the reading loss that typically occurs for students who have no access to appropriate reading materials over the long break from school will decrease. Students will be ready to learn in August instead of spending valuable weeks regaining their June reading level.

The books donated to this project go directly into the hands of eager readers at my school. These engaging texts will allow students to maintain their reading level over the summer. Maintaining reading levels over the summer allows students to progress as readers. They can begin to read more complex books. Students will be able to acquire knowledge and broaden their perspectives. Their world will grow. They will be exposed to diverse perspectives and cultures. Students will be able to express their thoughts and ideas in more creative ways. Reading is the key to unlocking their future.

The goal of the True Book Fair is to provide two free books to approximately 609 students. This Donors Choose project will support approximately 60 students.
