Trout in the Classroom is an amazing opportunity to connect students with their watershed environment. My students live in the waterfront community of Coney Island but only some have the opportunity to truly explore the creek and bay that surround the area. Over the years we have connected our science department with various educational environmental organizations (such as RiSC and Billion Oyster Project) that teach students the importance of our natural resources and how to protect our waterfronts. However, we don't as frequently make those connections in our own classrooms. I've had tanks of oysters, fish, and crabs, but those remain classroom projects.
As part of Trout in the Classroom, my students will be able to care for trout eggs and then release them in the wild once they have hatched.
Trout in the Classroom will support us with some of the equipment we need as well as curriculum, but we need to raise the funds for the aquarium, stand, filter, gravel, test kit, tank cover, and other equipment, including the large tank and filters needed to keep the trout eggs healthy.
