The majority of my students live in high socioeconomic need areas where they have less access to resources. They overcome systemic challenges on a daily basis and are still determined to succeed. Many of them are English Language Learners - talented bilinguals, and in some cases, trilinguals!
My Project
Please help me give my students microscopes to study plant and animal adaptations, pop-its for number sense and math games, and design-a-playground STEM kits to learn about forces and motion!
STEM allows students to satiate their curiosity about the world and engages them in solving real-world problems!
These tools will allow students to study our third grade NGSS standards in a hands-on way. We can use the microscopes and playground kits to engage in the scientific method where students make observations about the world, do research, make hypotheses, conduct experiments, and analyze data! They can go into the school garden, collect samples, and analyze plant and animal adaptations under a microscope! It allows gives us a chance to tie in biomimicry by observing nature's designs up close and then designing our own inventions.
They can design a playground in class, analyze the forces of motion, and then go test their observations on the real playground! The pop-its provide major student buy-in. We can use them to practice arrays, practice math facts, and build overall number sense by using something they already love!
