Students in my class have severe disabilities that make learning how to access technology difficult. We start teaching computer accessibility by teaching single switch controlled activities. .
My students are in a Kindergarten through 5th grade Special Day Class for Severe Disabilities at a public elementary school.
It's amazing to see their smiles when they arrive at school each day. They are greeted warmly by their same age general education peers.
Students in my class have multiple disabilities including cerebral palsy, autism, Downs Syndrome, vision impairments, and hearing loss.
My Project
Students will be using these toys to interact with their same ages peers during social times including recess and social skills class. Some students will access the toys on their wheelchair trays and some will on a desk top. Other students will be using the toys while they are out of their wheelchairs and laying on their stomachs. This allows the students to work on stretching with our physical therapist while playing with the toys alongside general education peers.
Assistive technology cause effect toys will greatly add to my students' appropriate interactions throughout the day.
The smiles and giggles caused by interacting with the toys will be contagious!
