My students need art supplies like paint, brushes and beads to create awareness about the need to care for our newly planted trees on our school block. We also need fencing materials.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Enough talk, lets do it!!!
This year my students and I are going to take it to the streets to create art around our newly planted trees to bring awareness to the importance of nature in our world!!!
My students are the average elementary Bronx kids learning in a school of over 1000; they come from everywhere and struggle on many levels.
They have different cultures, they speak different languages, and come with varied knowledge of school and western society which makes their growing in the Bronx difficult for many. This isn't new to the Bronx, and I have been teaching there for many years, but what's remarkable about them, is their willingness to take on new projects with a smile, and to work together to create beautiful art. I tell them all the time about the importance of recycling and reusing things, and how as a community we need to come together to ensure that Earth will be clean for future generations. This past year we created many projects using pages from discarded books, recycled bottles and caps for a mural, reused hangers for sculptures and so much more. This year, we want to take it to the streets and teach our community about the importance of trees.
My Project
New York city has taken on the amazing project of planting 1,000,000 trees and it is well on its way. However, 20% of these newly planted trees die from lack of care, cars backing up into them and uprooting them, dogs doing their thing, people leaning on them and breaking their limbs. With the stakes and mesh that I have requested, we will be creating fences to keep the dogs out but also to show drivers where the trees begin and where their parking spot ends. We will be painting rocks and shells collected over the summer to create a bedding for the trees as well as colorful art to beautify the street, bird feeders to welcome in various birds so that we may observe them, take pictures of them, and draw them, and create placards to teach the community about composting, which is to be practiced in NY public schools this year.
As you can see many components of learning will take place around this project, and I am very excited to welcome you in participating in making a difference.
I hope that others will recreate this project upon seeing it, and that soon all of our streets will be filled with colors and huge trees!
