My Students

I am a teacher at a Title I school where 90% of my students live in low-income households. Our school was shut down in March of 2020, and since then, the community has worked tirelessly to provide adequate virtual education for all learners. Although students are still able to receive the free daily meals that they are used to receiving in school, there are new and unexpected challenges being faced. Many of my students lack the supplies necessary to make their at-home learning environment meaningful and adequate. Learning through a screen can be extremely challenging, for both students and educators.

Even while facing all of these challenges, the 27 fourth graders at my school work extremely hard during virtual learning; they deserve nothing less than the best experiences and materials!

The encouragement, positivity, and collaboration of our students continues to amaze me every day. Despite all the uncertainty of this year and the amount of learning they have missed out on due to the pandemic, they continue to persevere and make learning so meaningful! They deserve to be afforded all of the opportunities that they would have in a brick and mortar setting.

My Project

With the end of the school year quickly approaching, we are preparing for state testing. This school year, students will be taking SOLs or virtual replacements in Math, Reading, and Virginia Studies (4th grade History). For many students, testing is a huge source of anxiety during a normal year - but as we know, the past year has been anything but normal due to COVID-19. In Virginia, students take the Standards of Learning for the first time in third grade. All state testing was cancelled last spring due to the pandemic, so this will be the first time my fourth-graders have ever taken these assessments.

SOLs and other high-stakes tests can be nerve-wracking for even the strongest learners; I want to help my students feel calmer with special treats to let them know that I am proud of them and that I know they are trying their best on the test!

My students are already expressing how nervous they are to take the SOLs, despite reassurance that it is not a grade and all I want is for them to do their best. My teammates and I are creating projects to help our students have some calming activities that are not in front of a screen; these projects will include books, mazes/puzzles, and these snacks! This project for snacks and candies will provide my students with special treats that will make them feel so special during this strange year. Thank you in advance for supporting this project!
