My Students

HELP! Our school just adopted a brand new reading series and I need books to spark my students' motivation. How can we have fun with books without any?

My students attend an urban public school where 99% are eligible for free lunches.

They come from homes where Spanish is spoken and English is the second language. My students LOVE "read aloud time". For many, school is the only time they get the opportunity to enjoy listening to stories. Ask any teacher, read aloud time is most likely their favorite time of the school day too. It is the time of day where EVERY student is completely absorbed in the activity. They are absolutely swept away. Even the MOST rambunctious students. A typical scenario after read aloud time is a mad dash for the book that was just read minutes ago. It is the most coveted book for silent reading time... that is, until.....the next read aloud time!

My Project

The books I desire will serve as a motivational tool to begin each new unit. Starting with a captivating book will ensure students partake enthusiastically in the anticipated learning. Having our students actively involved in the unit will guarantee success for learning. Not only is it entertaining, the students become one with the characters and lose themselves completely. With these read aloud books we can jump start the unit that will set the tone for the rest of the topic. How could I expect to begin an "Adventure" unit without Dr. Seuss' "Oh,The Places You'll Go!" or a unit on "Teamwork" without introducing the kids to Leo Lionni's "Swimmy"? In addition, our the students will eagerly anticipate silent reading time with this collection of books.

We know that "The more you read, the better you get at it; the better you get at it, the more you like it; and the more you like it, the more you do it." My goal is to get my students to read, to love it, and to be good at it.

We want it to be fun, exciting and pleasurable for us and our students. The collection of books I am seeking will do just that, and bring reading to life.
