My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. My goal is to provide engaging, creative, and meaningful learning experiences. How can I be successful with this endeavor when students do not have the necessary materials?

My fifth grade is comprised of 50 amazing students, many of whom come from low socio economic households and many have never traveled outside of the county.

They are dreamers, thinkers, talkers, and questioners. I want to give them a way to explore the world, despite the many challenges they face.

My Project

With these books, students will be able to take ownership of their reading with their own copy of the book. This will allow them to be more invested in their learning since it will keep them engaged with a more authentic learning atmosphere. Students will also have book chats, invested conversations with one another, and they'll become not only readers but critical thinkers.

Most students do not own any books, especially a copy of popular new releases.

This will create an excitement for reading. With these books, students will make real world connections so this becomes a lifelong lesson instead of a lesson of the week.
